The Network Management Group was born in 1994 under the initiative of professors of the Department of Signal Theory and Communications establishing as the prime aim the research on models for integration of open systems and standards with legacy solutions in the framework of the Telecommunication Management Network (TMN). In its time life span the group activities have been driven from network-element-level management to service-level management in the TMN architecture. Its is worthy to mention that the skills of the group cover: ATM and SDH management, SNMP and CMIP protocols, GDMO, Q3 and X Interfaces, CORBA, TINA, Alarm Correlation and QoS based routing, Web-based management, Java-based User Interfaces, and multi-platform development (IBM NetView, HP OpenView, OSIMIS). More recently, although still keeping interest in the above mentioned technologies, research has been focussed on the management of services provided by IP networks, addressing topics like midleware for IP Diffserv/Intserv QoS-based networks, and Active Networks.

The group maintains collaborative links with foreign institutions that often lay on exchange of ideas and researchers like with CITEDI (México), IBM Zurich Research Laboratory (Switzerland) or the University of Surrey (UK). Also, as there is a special interest to keep track of the industry evolution, the group is Affiliate Member of the Telemanagement Forum.
